Puppy Necessities: 10 Things Your Puppy Wants From You, By Janice A. Jones

To my beloved owner,

I love you very much and I will be your devoted friend until the day I die. However, I have a few requests. At a suitable time, could you provide the following so that I can continue to be your best friend forever? Your immediate response to these demands is most appreciated.

Sincerely, Your loyal canine friend

This is my list of puppy necessities.

1. Patience and Understanding: I know I'm a little stubborn and let's face it I really haven't had much experience. I want to please, so please, go slow and gentle with me. I'm going to make mistakes, I'm not always going to live up to your expectations, but I do try. Give me time and gentle reminders. You'll be surprised, one day I'll "get it." If you are on a strict budget, of all the puppy necessities this one is free.

2. A good diet: I know food is expensive, but if you could spend just a little more to provide me with a high quality diet, I am more likely to live to be a ripe old age. Help me to eat right and not too much, because I really don't want to be fat. Also, I love those table scraps, but some of your foods just don't set well with me like your chocolate donut. Please help me make good choices and I promise I'll serve as your loyal companion for many years to come

3. Cool Fresh Clean Water: I just love fresh water but sometimes I stick my whole head in the water and make it dirty. Please don't make me drink dirty water. Sometimes I love to drink water from streams or creeks, but please help me stop. Someone once told me that water from streams can make me sick. Also, please, please, please, don't forget to give me water. I don't need coffee, sodas or alcohol and water is cheap and my beverage of choice.

4. Love and Attention: I want to be part of your life, so please don't ignore me or I might have to find other things to do such as chewing up your furniture or ripping up your carpet. I get so lonely when you leave me alone, so please help me find appropriate things to do when you must be gone. Oh, and by the way, when you are home, I love to play, be cuddled and walked. Remember, this is one of those puppy necessities that don't cost anything.

5. Exercise: I love to move, whether it's just a run down the hallway or a jog in the park. Let me get some fresh air each day and if you're up to it, I'd love to take a walk. You'll be surprised that when I get enough exercise, some of my bad habits go away and I am easier to train. If you are adding up the costs of all those puppy necessities, a tread mill would be nice. Just kidding. That exercise thing-it might even be good for you

6. Safe Environment: I am so curious and will get into anything that is in my path: chemicals, poisons, electrical wires all make interesting playthings, but I've been told that they aren't good for me. I forget, so if you please, could you remove anything that might harm me from my surroundings so I can live to be 100. Oh, and by the way, I love to go with you when you do errands, but don't leave me in a hot car. That's a horrible way to die. Please keep me safe.

7. Comfortable Environment: I'm not too picky, but I don't like to be outdoors when it is too hot or too cold. I like your comfortable indoor temperature best. I also prefer sleeping on something soft so a comfy bed would be nice. If not, that's OK, I'll sleep with you! Remember I don't sweat, so if I get too hot, I pant to stay cool, but this is often not enough. Keep me by your side, and I'll be happy.

8. Stimulating Environment: I may be smarter than you think and I need something to exercise my brain. If you don't give me interesting things to do, I'll find something interesting to do on my own. I need stimulation and I have a feeling you aren't going to like what I come up with to keep me occupied. A few toys, some chew things, a puzzle toy or two, certainly cheaper than your human toys. If you keep me interested, I promise I won't dissect your cell phone.

9. Access to health care: This is one of those puppy necessities that are really important. I really don't like shots, but I know that a good physical is important and I'll put up with the shots and medications if it will keep me feeling great. I hate being sick, so please take me to the vet and provide me with those things that will keep me healthy, even if they don't taste great.

10. Pampering: I know I'm asking a lot, but I really do need pampering, you know all the brushing, bathing, and the entire myriad grooming that people like to do. If you train me early, I'll sit while you brush my teeth and clip my nails. I'll even learn to love those baths and promise not to get you too wet in the process. Most of all I love being with you, so go ahead, pamper me, I won't complain.

In conclusion, it does not take that much time or much effort, or for that matter, much money to keep you little dog happy, health, and content. It does take an understanding of the breed and the commitment to love your dog, even half as much as he loves you.
